With a smartphone coming out on almost a daily basis, the industry has started to love pitting one biggie against the other. The newest titans to enter the arena are the Nokia 8 and Samsung Galaxy S. Like most smartphone geeks, we could not resist comparing these mobiles to test how they fare.

Nokia N8 vs Samsung Galaxy S

On one hand, you have the Finnish giant who sits at the top but lately lost a bit of sheen of his crown. On the other side you have the Korean challenger who is going from strength to strength. Who will come up on top? We compared two of their latest creations, the new Nokia N8 and the new Samsung Galaxy S, to find out the answer.

Nokia N8 vs Samsung Galaxy specs

Web browsing receives thumbs down in the N8. The model is equipped with 3G and Wifi and you can switch between the two for optimum speeds. There is GPRS and EDGE support. But the browser is not up to the mark and the pace of surfing can be painfully sluggish at times. Minutes ticked by as our pages failed to load though there were times when the speed was decent. The fit text to display is either absent or failed to work. Compare this with the fast page loading capabilities of the fully loaded Samsung Galaxy Android phone at all times. We could easily scroll through the pages and zoom in when we liked. The pages were displayed according to the display. The N8 clearly lags behind in the browsing department.

Nokia N8 vs Samsung Galaxy video

The new Nokia N8 offers a high end 12MP Carl Zeiss camera that is one of the best you will see in recent times. It allows you to capture videos at 720 p and 25 fps. The Xenon flash capability helps you shoot amazing night-time photos minus the grains and blurs. We loved the camera potential of capturing dim-lit environments with great sharpness. HD Video recording is pretty amazing as well.

The Samsung Galaxy S phone lets you capture and play 720 p videos. You can shoot HD videos and be quite an amateur photographer with this baby. We loved the video quality but found it a tad inferior than the N8. The colors are better displayed in N8.

Nokia N8 vs Samsung Galaxy features

The Nokia N8 sports a 3.5 inch scratch resistant display whereas the Galaxy S boasts of a 4 inch Super AMOLED capacitive screen. The 640 X 360 p display is tough but the pixel quality is not very sharp. The Galaxy S scores in this department. The AMOLED display provides you with terrific angle views and amazing high-contrast ratio. The brightness of the LCD screen really makes you feel the difference under direct sunlight.

The N8 is loaded with a BL-4D 1200 mAh battery while the Galaxy is equipped with a 1500 mAh battery. Continuous use can exhaust the N8 battery in about 30 hrs. Sadly, we found the Galaxy struggling to run one full day. However, the N8 comes with a non-removable battery which can be annoying for some of you out there.

Nokia N8 vs Samsung Galaxy apps

Where applications are concerned, the N8 does not give you much choice. The Ovi store is better than ever before but it still fails to deliver the wide range of games and applications you need. The Galaxy S on the other hand, comes loaded with a number of handy applications. We personally liked Write & Go, Swype, Layar Reality Browser, Aldiko e-book reader and ThinkFree. You can get a range of other handy apps for your Samsung Galaxy S phone from the Android Market. You can see who scores.

Samsung Galaxy vs Nokia N8 price

You can buy Samsung Galaxy smartphone in about $ 599. The Nokia N8 price is set around $ 549. In terms of affordability, the N8 gets some edge over the Galaxy S.

Our view

Ever since Samsung Galaxy released, there has bee much talk about it. Frankly, we did not think much of them even when we checked out some of the Samsung Galaxy reviews on the net. But fiddling with the Galaxy S makes us admit it. The Korean challenger has moved up the ladder and with loads of panache. The Finnish giant has again lagged behind. It is about time Nokia pulls up its socks and thinks whether it wants to create a couple of top-line devices or an assembly of also-rans every year.

    Poor comparision.

SGS is ugly and made from plastic. No stereo radio, no flash, poor camera. No usb-on-the-go. Not usable gps, no free navigation.
